Ben Friedman began importing steel from Europe after WWII. His volume grew to a point that he diversified into vessel ownership to assist in transporting the material to the United States. He grew his fleet, Seven Seas Shipping, into 5 ocean-going vessels.
His next project became building a nationwide network of storage and processing locations, operating under the name of Caine Steel. Eventually this network grew to over 13 locations including key spots in Detroit, Chicago, and Atlanta. The Atlanta location was originally located on Ellsworth Industrial Boulevard.
After Ben’s passing in 1977, his son Les assumed leadership of the Chicago location, and his son Morton assumed leadership of the Detroit location. Morton partnered with two business associates to also acquire the Atlanta location, which was renamed as Great South Metals.
Great South Metals was incorporated in 1980.
In 1984, at the age of 25, Morton’s son Steve was able to buy Great South Metals from his father and partners.
In 1991 Steve moved Great South Metals from their location on South Cobb Drive to their current location in Acworth, GA. Our Acworth location has been expanded three times to our current footprint of 85,000 sq. ft.
In 2022, Great South Metals was acquired by Mainline Metals and became part of the Mainline Metals family of businesses. This expands our reach and network of supply options and customer solutions.
